FLORA (32 years old; born 1979; immigrated 2003)

Flora is not seen as often as her two sons (Fred and Frank), but is easily recognised by the snare injury that completely removed her right hand at the wrist. The ease with which she still manages to climb large trees and look after her young daughter (Faida), is all the more impressive given this loss.

FRED (17 years old; born 1994 ± 1 year) – see Fred (independent males)

FRANK (12 years old; born 1999 ± 1 year)

Frank’s the young troublemaker in the community – while he’s keen on playing, it almost always seems to end up in some sort of fight in which he is the chief instigator. He is almost totally independent of his mother and seems unafraid of displaying aggressively at much older and big chimps, which occasionally gets him into hot water. While he and his older brother Fred look as alike as peas in a pod they couldn’t have more different personalities, and despite his young age, the confident Frank is on the rise in the male hierarchy – a future contender for alpha male, but it’s unlikely to be a quiet rise to the top!

FAIDA (5 years old; born October 2006 ± 1 month)

A lovely little girl who has inherited none of her brother’s ornery nature, her name means ‘profit’ in Swahili.  She’s starting to become independent enough to move a little distance from her mother. While Flora often spends a lot of time alone, Faida seems very sociable and usually makes the most of her contact with other young chimps with lots of playful interaction.
